A Song and Dance is Good for What Ails You, Especially for Seniors

Senior care in Croton-on-Hudson and Cortlandt Manor

Music is a mood lifter that delivers smiles to the listener. Indeed, the power of music should not be underestimated, especially when it comes to the elderly, as it has great therapeutic potential. Senior-care-in-Croton-on-Hudson-and-Cortlandt-Manor

“When used appropriately, music can shift moods, manage stress, alleviate agitation, stimulate positive interactions, facilitate cognitive function and coordinate motor movements,” explains Geralyn DiGiovanni, manager of client services at The Perfect Home Care.

Ms. DiGiovanni is an amateur entertainer who regularly volunteers her time and talent to perform at senior facilities in The Perfect Home Care’s service area, including Skyview Rehabilitation and Health Center in Croton-on-Hudson, NY and Field Home Holy Comforter in Cortlandt Manor, NY.

Ms. DiGiovanni, who plays guitar and sings, notes that the benefits of music therapy even extend to seniors suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia. “That’s because rhythmic responses require little to no cognitive or mental processing,” she explains.

Ms. DiGiovanni, and her performance partner, JD Southard, note that seniors make the best audiences. “They really appreciate our shows,” says Ms. Southard. “They sing along, tap their feet, and really get into the music. Some will even stand and start dancing.”

Ms. DiGiovanni and Ms. Southard both suggest encouraging an elderly friend or relative who loves music to rekindle the passion. Here are some other suggestions:

  • If you have an elderly relative who used to play an instrument, try to get him or her playing again. If the instrument is gone, buy an affordable replacement.
  • If you and your older loved one sing or play instruments, by all means do so together, especially if you haven’t before. Music can create a very special bond.
  • If your loved one was a music lover, but not a musician, ask about his or her favorite music. Maybe even ask for a list of his or her favorite artists, albums, and songs.
